This years Juneteenth Festival is June 17-18 at the newly renovated Emancipation Park at 3018 Dowlilng St. As the first truly public park in Houston, Emancipation Park was first opened in 1872 by a group of former slaves to honor the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Ten years ago a group of Houstonians formed the Emancipation Park Conservancy to raise money and bring the park back to prominence. After a $33.6 million renovation they have done that and even more. The 10-acre facility boasts a recreation center, health center, basketball court, pool and more. If you can’t make the festival, head to the park anyway and see what a great addition to Houston it has become.
