One of the hidden gems inside the 610 Loop is the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center located on the western edge of Memorial Park. This 155-acre non-profit urban nature sanctuary provides education about the natural environment to people of all ages. It plays a vital role in protecting native plants and animals in the heart of the city where development threatens their survival. Besides protecting plants and animals, it is a fun place to visit with your family or for a nice hike on five miles of nature trails. Each summer the Arboretum offers children’s programs that lead to a life-long appreciation of the natural world through week long Discovery Classes. Thousands of school children visit the Arboretum on field trips designed for their age and grade level. Call ahead to see if groups are in attendance if you prefer a more quiet experience.
