Boomin’ and Bloomin’ Attwater Prairie Chicken Festival

This is the annual celebration of the Attwater’s prairie-chicken, one of the most endangered birds in North America who is only found in the Houston region. The festival is April 14 and 15 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Refuge. Early morning van tours will take participants up to one of the booming grounds to watch the male prairie chicken’s famous courtship dance. Other events include wildflower and native plant guided tours, bird walks and birding van tours with experienced birders, refuge management tours and a merchandise booth sponsored by the Friends of Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge. Participants interested in seeing the birds are encouraged to arrive early.
