Hike Lake Houston Wilderness Park

Once a Texas State Park, Lake Houston Wilderness Park was purchased by the City of Houston over 7 years ago and has become one of the hidden gems in the area for hiking and camping. It has over 4,786.6 acres of wooded parkland, and is located only 30 minutes north of downtown Houston near New Caney. It is the only park in the H.P.A.R.D. system where overnight camping is available. There are cabins and campsites available for rental as well as a large group pavilion. Activities include hiking and biking on 12 miles of hike and bike trails, kayaking, and horseback riding. There are no bike, boat, nor horse rentals so bring your own. The park is a wilderness park and is heavily forested, so visitors need to be aware that wildlife in the park includes several species of snakes. The trails include hikes along the creek and into the woods away from the campsites. There are some primitive campsites along the creek for those backpacking types. If you are able, try and camp during the week since weekends are becoming quite popular.
